As we say goodbye to 2016 and begin 2017, it is my prayer that it be a year filled with God’s blessings and happiness in greater abundance more than last year. It is my prayer that you grow stronger and closer to God and that you find what He wishes to do with your life this year. May it be a year of prosperity, health, and peace!
Instead of setting unrealistic goals and expectations, I encourage you to seek God first in everything that you do. Let your goals be His goals and His expectations become your expectations! Let Him guide your steps every minute of every day, and He will not fail you!
Scripture is full of God’s promises to overtake you with His Anointing if you commit your life to Him…fully commit to letting your life reflect His perfect will for yours (see Deuteronomy 28:1-14).
If there is anything in your life that is hindering your relationship with God, then now is the perfect time to change. Just start, and God will meet you where you are. There is nothing that you have done or can do that God will not fix. No matter how far you may have seemed from God, He has never left you (see Hebrews 13:5). No matter how distant your relationship with Him may have been in 2016, He will change your heart and help you grow in Him in 2017 if you give Him the chance. Read what is says in Ezekiel 36:26:
26 I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. (NKJV)
If there is any anger, bitterness, unforgiveness, hostility, or unkindness that existed in 2016, today is the day of new beginnings where you can hit the reset button and start again. There is no relationship problem that God cannot fix, if you forgive and turn it over to Him. Today, there is no better time than to do that! Ephesians 4:32 says:
32 And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you. (NKJV, italics added for emphasis)
If there is any fear, anxiety, worry, or doubt that you carried with you last year, today is the day for you to roll all of that over onto Jesus and let Him take control. We have the great assurance that no matter what we are facing that He is always with us and that He wants us to roll all of our cares over onto Him! Philippians 4:6-7 says:
6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God;
7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. (NKJV)
If there is any hurt or pain in your life, maybe from a relationship that soured last year, today is the day to let the Great Physician put His healing hand upon it. Grief and sorrow will stop your growth in Christ because the hurt and pain takes center focus instead of Him. God desires to take away all of your hurt and pain so that you can walk in happiness and freedom so that He can show you new and better things this next year. Look at Psalm 147:3:
3 He heals the brokenhearted And binds up their wounds. (NKJV)
If the devil has attacked you with any thoughts of insecurity, fear, doubt, or has convinced you have no value…that you’re “no one special” or that “no one really cares about you”, just remember that the is a liar and the truth is not in him (see John 8:44). No matter what he says to you, though, you have the ability to overcome it. You have to push it out of your mind using scripture to fill its place. 2 Corinthians 10:4-5 says:
4 For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds,
5 casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ. (NKJV, italics added for emphasis)
Today you have a chance to wipe the slate completely clean from anything that afflicted you or that kept you from growing in Christ. No matter what it may have been, you are not defined by your past but by what you learn from it to change who you are now so that the future can be better. You can choose to remain stagnant in how you walk with God or you can choose to be free from all of the burdens of the devil. Either way, it is your choice, not God’s.
Jesus has already done everything you need to begin this new year in victory. Luke 4:18b-19 says, in Jesus’ own words:
18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed;
19 To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord. (NKJV)
So I would encourage you to dig deep. Pray harder and longer. Get into God’s word and let it fill your mind until there is no room for any lies of the devil. Go deeper into your relationship with Christ. Seek God’s will for your life beginning this first day of 2017! Jesus came to set His people free of all burdens of the devil, so find out how you’re able to do that. Just remember that God would not have said you could do it if it weren’t possible.
